Regulations for Aquarium Collectors

cropped-yellow-tangs-cropped1.jpgThe aquarium fishing industry in the state of Hawai’i has been largely concentrated in the waters of the West Hawai’i Regional Fishery Management Area.  In order to ensure sustainability of a resource which is utilized by a number of different stakeholder groups, it was found necessary to implement rules for this industry that are not applicable to the rest of the state.   These rules are listed here.  For further information, collectors and other interested parties can call the Kona Division of Aquatic Resources office at 808-327-6226 or visit the office at Honokohau Small Boat Harbor. In addition to state regulations that apply to all boaters and fishers, aquarium collectors MUST:

  • have a Commercial Marine License from the State of Hawai’i
  • have an Aquarium Collector’s permit from the State of Hawai’i (small mesh net exemption permit)
  • have a West Hawaii Collector’s permit – available at the West Hawai’i Division of Aquatic Resources office at Honokohau Harbor.
  • carry all valid permits on the vessel while fishing.
  • register boat and collecting gear each year with the Division of Aquatics Resources office at Honokohau Harbor.
  • add the letters AQ in a clearly visible spot on both sides of the registered boat.  Letters must be permanently affixed, must be 6″ tall or taller and in a color that contrasts greatly with the background color of the boat.
  • report catches.
  • call in and report to the Division of Aquatic Resources if the collector(s) intend to overnight on the ocean.  They must specify exactly where they will be and until when. No aquarium fishing must take place during that time.
  • comply with any and all other state fishing and boating regulations.

Additionally, all aquarium collectors must NOT:

  • fish within an FRA.  An aquarium boat must not be moored, anchored or adrift in

  • fish between the hours of sundown and sunup anywhere along the West Hawaii Regional Fishery Management Area (the entire West Hawaii coastline).

  • take or possess more than five goldrim surgeonfish (kole) more than 4 inches TL per day.
  • take or possess more than ten Achilles tang of any size per day.
  • take, harm, harass, or attempt any of such actions for the nine species of sharks and rays, as well as triton trumpet shells and/or horned helmet shells, as listed on the Prohibited Species for All Fishers .
