Fishery Management Areas (FMAs)

Despite the impression that West Hawai’i has a lot of space where fishing isn’t allowed, this is actually not true.  Almost the entire coastline is open to some kind of fishing.  Fishery Management Areas, like other types of Marine Managed Areas, usually restrict only one or two types of fishing, often prohibiting certain gear types or palu (bait).  Each one has different rules so be sure to check each one.

Some of the areas listed below may also be layered with additional designations.  Be sure to check both.
